If someone who struggles to trust others starts to open up to you, please don’t stop them. It doesn’t matter if you don’t need to know this or if it’s too damn personal. The fact is that at some point in their life someone hurt them so badly they were scared to be vulnerable again. And they picked you. Through all the years of cynicism and people with bad intentions, they chose you to trust. So please be supportive. Let the flood gates open. They will talk about everything they kept bubbling in their chest for so many years. Every sentence they were terrified to utter out loud. And you don’t have to react in any spectacular way, just be there for them. It is so brave to choose to be soft after so many people have given you reason not to. Voluntarily knocking down your walls is scary. Please don’t make them feel stupid. Sometimes all it takes is one person to restore another’s faith in the world. All it will take is someone to listen and that person’s entire existence will have changed.
